How far is Gondwana from Cape Town and is it really on the Garden Route?
About four hours by road along the N2 and yes. Gondwana is near Mossel Bay, which is where the Garden Route begins. Cape Town at one speed, the reserve at another.
Route detail. N2 east, R327 towards Herbertsdale, follow the Gondwana signs. Self drive is straightforward on a well kept road. Road transfers from Cape Town or George are arranged on request through the reservations team.
Is Gondwana malaria free?
Yes. The Western Cape is a malaria free region. No antimalarials are needed for the reserve itself. If your trip includes other regions, check with your doctor.
Will I see the Big 5?
Lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhino all move freely across 11,000 hectares, which means no sighting is staged and none is guaranteed. Most guests see most of them over two nights. Your guide reads the reserve each morning and goes where the animals are, not where a schedule says.
Cape mountain zebra and Rau quagga are confirmed on the reserve and may be seen alongside the Big 5.
What does the landscape actually look like?
Not the Serengeti. Gondwana sits in fynbos, the smallest and richest of the world's six floral kingdoms, below the Outeniqua mountains. Expect low, flowering scrub in every colour, mountains on the skyline and elephants moving through it, on land that twenty years of regenerative work turned from farms back into a reserve. First time guests picturing open savanna are surprised and then they are not.

What is a day on safari like here?
Two game drives, one at first light and one into dusk, because that is when the reserve is awake. Breakfast after the first, dinner after the second and the hours in between are yours. Guests arrive planning to fill them and by the second day have stopped.
This is what the travel press now calls hushpitality. Body copy carries the idea. No day visitors, two drives, the hours in between are yours.
How many nights should I book?
Two nights gives you four game drives and a real sense of the reserve. Three is the number most guests say they wish they had booked. Kwena Lodge and Lehele Lodge accept single night stays, which is how Cape Town and Garden Route residents turn a weekend into a staycation. The private residences are booked for two nights or more.
Can children come and from what age?
Yes. Lehele Lodge and the private residences welcome children of any age. Children aged 3 and over can join game drives. Kwena Lodge is for couples and for guests aged twelve and over.

What is included and what is not?
Your stay includes accommodation, all meals and two game drives a day. A conservation fee applies once per stay and is set out with every quote. Drinks, wellness treatments and transfers are separate and are set out with your quote.
When is the best time to come?
Year round. Each season has its own character. Summer brings long light and calves on the plains. Autumn and winter light up the fynbos and the nectar birds. Spring brings flowers, returning migrants and more young antelope. See Seasons for the month by month picture.
What should I pack?
Layers. Southern Cape mornings are cool on an open vehicle even in summer, so bring a warm jacket, a hat, sunglasses and sun protection and closed shoes for the fynbos walk. Neutral colours are practical rather than compulsory. Binoculars, eight by forty two, are worth the space.

Can I visit for the day?
No. Gondwana does not take day visitors, for the security of guests and wildlife and for the quiet of the reserve. Every safari here is an overnight stay.
Which lodge is right for us?
Kwena Lodge for couples and guests twelve and over. Lehele Lodge and Villas for families, with children of any age and the Junior Ranger Programme. The private residences, Ulubisi House, Black Rhino Villa, Ikhara Villa and Psamma Villa, for a multigenerational family or a group of friends who want the house to themselves with their own guide and vehicle. If you are unsure, tell the reservations team who is travelling and they will guide you.
What can we do besides game drives?
An e bike safari through the fynbos, a guided walk, wellness treatments and, for children, the Junior Ranger Programme. Soft adventure rather than the hard kind. None of it is scheduled for you.
Is there signal and do I want it?
Every lodge has high speed WiFi, so you can stay in touch if you need to and a workation from one of the residences is entirely possible. There is none on a game drive. Most guests stop checking by the second morning and if you would rather your phone stayed in the room, it can.
Is this what people mean by slow travel?
Yes and by hushpitality, quiet luxury, the whycation, the two speed holiday and depending on who is writing, a coolcation, a workation, a staycation, noctourism or simply JOMO. The travel press has coined most of these in the last two years. Gondwana has been doing it for twenty and calling it a safari. Two game drives a day, no day visitors, no schedule between them and a reserve that is quiet because rewilding made it so.
