on foot with only a light daypack.
The Pioneer Trail presents an exclusive three-night walking safari, delving into unique facets of Gondwana’s critically endangered Cape Floral Kingdom. Guided by our experienced trail guides, you’ll traverse the landscapes where the San, the ancient pioneers of this land, once walked. On this immersive journey, you’ll witness first-hand San’s game tracking, wild food gathering, and celestial navigation skills. Crafted for environmentally conscious explorers, this experiential walking safari offers a profound connection with nature, complemented by rustic accommodations in a secluded bush-tented camp.
The Pioneer Trail consists of two hikes along carefully selected trails that highlight the region’s biodiversity and beauty.
These trails are inspired by the seasonal movements of the San, who followed the changing landscape due to their migratory way of life. Throughout your stay, a dedicated camp team, including a chef, housekeeper, and two expert guides, will cater to your needs.
Please be informed that the Pioneer Trail will be closed from January 10, 2024.
However, we’re excited to introduce the San Trail as a replacement, offering an incredible experience for all guests staying at any accommodation on the reserve. The San Trail will operate daily from Kwena Lodge.

“We recently had the absolute pleasure of walking across the Gondwana reserve as part of the 3 night Pioneer Trail. Our guide was brilliant and we learnt so much about the reserve, nature and animals. We felt incredibly safe the entire time and had some pretty amazing animal sightings. Then for the animals we didn’t see, we did a spectacular game drive. Couldn’t recommend this experience enough! Thank you so much.”
